Andy Stanley is one of the best communicators I know of. He is thought-provoking, inspirational, and memorable. Best of all, he is a great story teller that knows how to keep my attention! I just finished his latest book, The Principle of the Path. The book revolves around a very simple principle: Direction—not intention—determines our destination.

This principle seems obvious, but as we travel on the journey of life we don’t really think about it. Or, when we do think about it it’s because we realize we’ve chosen the wrong path.

Everyone has dreams and desires for their future. Most of us have great intentions. But our intentions alone aren’t enough to get us to our desired destination. We must be making choices and decisions that keep us moving in the right direction. Life is connected. Yesterday affects today, and today will affect tomorrow. The things you do and the decisions you make today will affect tomorrow’s experiences.

Some other helpful takeaways from Andy are:

The best question ever: “In light of my past experience, and my future hopes and dreams, what’s the wise thing to do?”

Our quest for happiness often trumps our appreciation and pursuit for truth.

There is a relationship between submission to God and our ability to pick the best path.

“You will never reach your full potential without tapping into the wisdom of others.”

“Your life would be better, richer, and more enjoyable if less of your attention had been hijacked from the things you should have been focusing on.”

“The things you give your attention to will influence the direction and destination of everyone in your circle of influence.”

Disappointment creates powerful emotions. Emotions fueled by disappointment can drive people to behaviors that put their dreams (and the dreams of others) out of reach.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, but I think it is especially helpful for young people. The sooner you understand and live by this principle, the greater your chance of avoiding future regrets.

We all have dreams. Some of them are worth pursuing. However, there are some things to consider before jumping in with both feet. So what does it take to achieve a dream? What things need to be considered before pursuing your dream? How do you know if a dream is worth pursuing?

I recently came across John Maxwell’s new book, Put Your Dream to the Test. In this book, Dr. Maxwell presents ten questions that every dreamer needs to ask to put a dream to the test:

The Ownership Question: Is my dream really my dream?

The Clarity Question: Do I clearly see my dream?

The Reality Question: Am I depending on factors within my control to achieve my dream?

The Passion Question: Does my dream compel me to follow it?

The Pathway Question: Do I have a strategy to reach my dream?

The People Question: Have I included the people I need to realize my dream?

The Cost Question: Am I willing to pay the price for my dream?

The Tenacity Question: Am I moving closer to my dream?

The Fulfillment Question: Does working toward my dream bring satisfaction?

The Significance Question: Does my dream benefit others?

If you can answer yes to all of these questions, then the odds of achieving your dream are pretty good. Dream BIG and go for it!

I recently finished reading Killing Cockroaches by Tony Morgan. Let me just say it: If you are a pastor or leader in a church that is serious about spreading your message, then you must read this book. Tony’s book is about the methods we use to spread our message.

“The church needs to wake up. We may be communicating truth, but people aren’t listening. That’s not a message problem–that’s a method problem.” – Tony Morgan

It’s time for change. It’s time to get more strategic. Tony’s book is a great tool for anyone involved in a church who wants to think creatively about innovative ways to engage people with your ministry.

Here are 7 reasons to read Killing Cockroaches:

Tony is a church strategy guru. I’ve been reading his blog for a couple of years. He’s got a lot of good things to say. I have learned alot from Tony’s thoughts. If you are a pastor or leader in a church, he’s someone I’d take the time to listen to.

If you don’t think strategy is important in ministry, then give this book a chance. It may change your mind. Oh, and don’t miss the story about Nothing, Arizona and Tony’s list of 10 Advantages of Doing Ministry Without a Strategy.

The book is so easy to read. I like Tony’s style. His writing has a great mix of stories, humor, sarcasm, and practical ideas. There are no chapters. Instead the book is packed with bite-sized nuggets of wisdom. Each piece of wisdom will left me wanting more.

The book is practical. I suggest you take Tony’s advice and read the book slowly implementing the ideas as you read it. Even better, you might want to go through this book together with your ministry team.

Tony keeps things simple. Clayton King once said, “Knowledge is the accumulation of facts. Wisdom is the application of common sense.” To me much of what Tony says is simply application of common sense. Tony does not allow his knowledge to complicate things.

I love bullet points and lists. There are lots of em in Tony’s book.

It will prepare you for the Killing Cockroaches Summer Tour.

No exaggeration….If you apply the principles in Tony’s book you will take your ministry to a whole new level!

I recently finished reading In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day by Mark Batterson. I first heard of this book about two years ago. It was one of those that I always thought I might want to read someday, but I just never got around to it. Some friends of ours recently gave Amy and I a copy of the book because we are going to go through it in our homegroup.

The timing couldn’t have been better for us. As I read this book it constantly seemed like this book was written just for me. I think that’s just because God’s timing is always perfect. God placed this book in my hands at just the right time, and he used just the right person to communicate truth to me just the way I needed to hear it.

Actually, I believe this book was written for you too! Everyone could benefit from reading this book. If you are bored with life, then read this book. If you have a dream and need some inspiration and encouragement to pursue it, then read this book. If your life is filled with problems and uncertainty, then read this book. If you are ready to use your God-given potential to something big or crazy, then read this book!

If you read this book Mark will challenge you to:

defy odds

face fears

reframe problems

embrace uncertainty

take risks

seize opportunities

look foolish

pray the unthinkable

attempt the impossible

The book is PACKED with truth, encouragement, inspiration, and wisdom. Here are some of my favorite highlights from this book:

“God is in the business of strategically positioning us in the right place at the right time. But the right place often seems like the wrong place, and the right time often seems like the wrong time.”

“[God] is always using past experiences to prepare us for future opportunities.”

“Success is doing the best you can with what you have where you are.”

“I’m absolutely convinced that our greatest regrets in life will be missed opportunities.”

“Lion chasers know God is bigger and more powerful than any problem they face in this world. They thrive in the toughest circumstances because they know that impossible odds set the stage for amazing miracles. That is how God reveals his glory–and how He blesses you in ways you never could have imagined.”

“God loves impossible odds.”

“How you think about God will determine who you become.”

“The greatest breakthroughs in your life will happen when you push through the fear. The defining moments will double as the scariest decisions. But you’ve got to face those fears and begin the process of unlearning them.”

“The only God-ordained fear is the fear of God. And if we fear God, then we don’t have to fear anyone or anything else. Unlearning our fears is really a process of learning to trust God more and more.”

“Jesus never ran away from anyone or anything.”

“The alternative to fear is boredom. If you’re bored, one thing is for sure: You’re not following in the footsteps of Christ. At some point in your life you have to make a choice between fear and boredom. Lion chasers choose fear.”

“Opportunities often look like insurmountable obstacles.”

“It’s our past problems that prepare us for future opportunities.”

“Maybe our problem isn’t our circumstances. Maybe our problem is our perspective.”

“Maybe prayer is less about changing our circumstances than it is changing our perspective. Maybe we need to quit praying safe prayers.”

“The circumstances you complain about become chains that imprison you. And worship is the way out. Worship reframes our problems and refocuses our lives. It helps us get through the bad days by reminding us how good God is.”

“If you don’t turn your adversity into a ministry, then your pain remains your pain. But if you allow God to translate your adversity into a ministry, then your pain becomes someone else’s gain.”

“The more problems you have, the more potential you have to help people.”

“One of the most paralyzing mistakes we make is thinking that our problems somehow disqualify us from being used by God.”

“Trials have a way of helping us rediscover our purpose in life.”

“Lion chasers are more afraid of lifelong regrets than temporary uncertainty….You have to do something counterintuitive if you want to reach your God-given potential and fulfill you God-given destiny. Sometimes you have to run away from security and chase uncertainty.”

“Faith embraces uncertainty.”

“Some of the best things in life are totally unplanned and unscripted.”

“God uses risk-takers….The more you’re willing to risk, the more God can use you. And if you’re willing to risk everything, then there is nothing God can’t do in you and through you.”

“Most God-ordained dreams die because we aren’t willing to do something that seems illogical.”

“God is in the business of making sure we cross paths with the right people at the right time.”

“If you wait for perfect conditions to seize an opportunity, you’ll be waiting till the day you die.”

“What really matters is what we do with what we know.”

“If you aren’t willing to look foolish, you’re foolish.”

“Normality is overrated.”

“I’d rather be disliked for who I am thank liked for who I’m not.”
