Create More, Consume Less

by Adam Zuercher on December 5, 2009

I want to be a creator, not a consumer.

That is the thought I had this morning after spending a couple of hours catching up on all the latest posts from the blogs I follow (way too many by the way).

I have this constant desire to be on top of the latest news and trends within the areas that interest me most: investing, the economy, business, technology, social media, health, family, faith, church, and many more!  I have a wide range of interests so the amount of information there is to stay on top of is overwhelming.

What I have discovered is this: I can spend a lot of time consuming a lot of information.  But, this information doesn’t do me a bit of good if I don’t use it to create something.  In other words, knowledge without application is useless.

So, I have decided to create more and consume less.  This can mean many different things.  Here’s how I’m going to apply it as I thought about it today:

Spend less time consuming information.  Spend more time creating helpful information.

This means I should be creating more blog posts and reading fewer.  Look for more on this blog as well as more on my investment blog.

It also means that I should share the best thoughts and ideas with others.  It doesn’t help you if I keep the best ideas to myself.  That’s one reason I am on Twitter.  I like to share links to some of the best ideas and thoughts I find on the web.  Follow me on Twitter if you have similar interests to catch my links.

So what does this mean to you?  What ideas do you have to create more and consume less?

  • It really does. I really like the new "sort by magic" option to see the most popular posts rise to the top. That way similar sites within one folder become easier to manage once I get behind!
  • I was not aware of the "sort by magic" option until you mentioned it.
    Thanks for the tip!
  • I agree Adam. My google reader routinely has 1000+ unread items. I started my site to try to do what your saying and contribute to the conversation.
  • Sounds alot like my Google Reader lately. It seems like I'm constantly discovering new blogs that I want to follow. The nice thing is that tools like Google Reader save a ton of time and make it much more efficient to follow so many great blogs...
